Your bus has arrived at the station

23 July 2018

Ding – ding!

The sound of a bus’ bell is a memorable sound for so many of us. Even on the more modern buses of today, the jingle of a bell can still be heard. The memories that this sound evokes are a part of our new summer exhibition.

Our newest exhibition, Ticket to Ride, officially launched at the weekend to great praise from local families and bus enthusiasts alike.

The exhibition contains three buses with great stories of their own to tell. The largest bus is a 1950s double decker Daimler – Bus 333 – that used to diligently shuttle Coventrians across the city. Painted in the livery of Coventry’s old bus colours, it is a majestic sight to see when entering the exhibition for the first time.

We also have a bus that visitors can enter! A bus that has travelled all the way to Afghanistan and back. Don clothing of your own choosing, write a postcard and set off on your very own quest inside of Mabel, the loveable little adventurous bus filled with holiday goodness.

The main focus of the exhibition is the stories of local people. The people who worked on the buses, the people who rode on the buses and the people who fixed the buses. These personal stories range from overcoming adversity as a member of the ‘Windrush Generation’ to finding love in unexpected places. These are stories from a diverse cast of local people that will feel familiar to so many of us.

There is lots to do at ‘Ticket to Ride’ with a skilfully created family experience that kids of all school ages can enjoy. Help yourself to a lost luggage pack and rummage through its engaging STEM activities, or choose your (pretend) snack from the vending machine. Relax, play and explore in a family friendly space.

We want to hear from you – what are your own bus stories? There are tickets dotted around the exhibition for you to write down your own personal tales. Your own experiences matter, we would love for you to share them.

But that’s not all! During the summer holiday we are running STEM workshops at the museum designed to get kids loving learning and just have some good summer fun.
