Coventry Champions

Coventry has a long history of producing champions harking back to the heyday of bicycle manufacture in the late 19th century. Since then, numerous Coventry people and vehicles have achieved competitive success. Take the fascinating Muriel Hind. A pioneering female racing motorcyclist who took on men in motorcycle time trials in the early 1900s, Muriel was often ridiculed by her contemporaries, but she won a number of races and went on to become a journalist for Motorcycling magazine.

International race success followed for Coventry’s car firms too. In the 1920s Lea Francis motorcars achieved wins at the Ulster TT and Le Mans with the Lea Francis Hyper. In the 1950s and 1960s the Rootes rally team enjoyed a number of successes. Their 1954 Sunbeam MKIII rally car is displayed in the museum alongside photos of it in action. Visitors can also get close to a Jaguar F1 car from 2003, the year before the Jaguar team was sold to Red Bull.
