Object of the Fortnight - 1947 Daimler

This superb vehicle was delivered to King George VI on 5th May 1947 and was the No 1 State Car until 1949. During this period it covered well over 30,000 miles and featured in many great State occasions carrying not only members of the Royal Family but distinguished guests as well.

The car features a folding Landaulette at the rear and a Perspex roof so that occupants can be more easily seen. It is fitted with all the usual Royal refinements and also includes numerous extras such as the glove warmers fitted just above the rear seat armrests!

After being in the Royal Fleet it eventually came into the ownership of Mr March Chaplin of Leicester in 1981. He used it extensively in his car hire business until his untimely death in 1985 whereupon it was bequeathed to the Museum.

This car is on temporary display in honour of the success of the film The King’s Speech.
