World-class collection in a World-class museum

Model World

The museum is proud to display a fantastic collection of model cars which once belonged to Tibor Reich and his family. Tibor was a pioneering post-war textile designer who made his name designing the fabric for the QE2 liner and Concorde. Born in Budapest to a wealthy Jewish family, he immigrated to Britain in 1937 when Nazism was on the rise.

After studying at Leeds University he moved to Stratford and began a thriving textiles business, but his passion was collecting models.

Tibor and his sons collected model after model until they had more than 20,000 items. The collection contains models from familiar toy manufacturers like Corgi, Dinky, Lesney, Matchbox and Lledo. Our display includes a large interactive diorama, with noises, lights and even a running model steam train – this zone is for children of all ages!
