Iconic Loan to Celebrate Mini’s 60th Birthday

A rare electric 1964 Mini Countryman has made its way to the Transport Museum in Coventry.

The Austin Mini is kindly on loan from Leicester Museum Service, and will be showcased in our Future Technology Gallery as of next week. Not only does the ‘tweed grey’ car look incredibly appealing, it is also proof that electrics are not as new as one might think.

As part of a project by SWEB (South Western Electricity Board) the 1964 build promoted electric travel and was converted to be battery powered. In the process, both the engine and gearbox have been replaced by an electric motor. Fuel cost are as low as 0.4p a mile, but the batteries which weighed 668lbs, needed recharging every 30 miles. The Mini Countryman is road legal and completely operational reaching a top speed of up to 41 mph.
