Robot Day at the Transport Museum

A major science and technology event that will explore all things robotic is coming to Coventry this March and is aimed at everyone from toddlers to academics.

Robot Day will take place at the Coventry Transport Museum on Saturday, March 9, and aims to entertain and inspire people of all generations with a host of interactive activities, displays, presentations and performances.

The event, which is being organised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) with support from Coventry University, Culture Coventry and Imagineer Productions, is part of British Science Week which runs from March 8 until March 17.

Visitors to the free event will have the chance to build their own robot, get hands-on with coding, hear from experts about how robots improve people’s lives and experience virtual reality. There are also bomb disposal, industrial robot and drone displays.

A special performance has also been commissioned that will see Imagineer Productions’ six-metre high Lady Godiva perform with the Urban Astronaut.

On top of that, there will be craft and dance workshops, a range of static and moving exhibits and inspirational talks and lectures from world leaders in the field of robotics such as Kevin Warwick, who claims to be the world’s first cyborg after experimenting with implants that can control external devices.

Organiser Stephen Powley, of the IET, said it promised to be a fun and educational day out for people of all ages.

He said: “We are very pleased to be bringing Robot Day to the Coventry Transport Museum in March and we want to grow the event in the city in the build up to Coventry becoming City of Culture 2021.

“There is going to be so much to see and do and there will be something for everyone – from toddlers right through to adults and from people with a real academic interest in the science of robotics to those who want to have a bit of fun with some hands-on activities.

“There is a very strong focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) in education right now and Robot Day is a fantastic way of bringing all of that to life and showing how technology plays a major part in our everyday lives.

“Engineering, like the arts, touches everything we do and the partnerships we’ve developed in Coventry give us a powerful way to showcase how the two come together.

“This is a great way for Coventry to celebrate its heritage of invention and innovation and hopefully to inspire a new generation of innovators.”

David Pilsbury, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Coventry University, added: “We are very proud to be backing Robot Day and can’t wait to see the whole event coming together.

“It’s rare to get an event that will interest such a wide spectrum of people but because of the nature of the activities, the performances and the lectures and seminars, there really will be something for everyone.”

Robot Day, which is part of British Science Week, will take place at the Coventry Transport Museum on Saturday, March 9, from 10am until 4pm.
