PlayHEM: Bringing STEM Learning to Your Community
Spark curiosity, creativity and innovative thinking with PlayHEM – a flexible, hands-on STEM experience inspired by the collections and stories of Coventry Transport Museum.
Designed to encourage playful exploration, problem-solving and creative thinking, PlayHEM brings engaging resources and activities directly into your setting. Whether you are a school, community group, holiday club or family organisation, our Learning Team can deliver sessions that inspire participants to explore STEM concepts through making, experimenting, building and play.
PlayHEM helps children and young people develop confidence, teamwork, communication and practical problem-solving skills, while discovering how STEM connects to the world around them – from the vehicles we travel in to the engineers who design the future.
A flexible experience designed around you.
Sessions can be adapted to suit different ages, abilities, group sizes and environments, making PlayHEM suitable for a wide range of settings. Choose from individual themes or combine activities to create a bespoke experience that meets your group’s interests and needs.
We can also work with settings on a regular basis, allowing participants to revisit new challenges, build skills over time and enjoy a variety of PlayHEM experiences throughout the year.
Choose from our STEM themes:
Loose parts play:
Explore STEM through open-ended play using a mixture of large-scale resources including crates, tyres, pipes and den-building materials, alongside smaller transport-inspired objects, dress-up items and small-world play resources.
Participants are encouraged to experiment, design, build and collaborate while discovering the science, technology, engineering and maths ideas hidden within everyday play.
Engineering:
Discover what engineering means and explore the important role engineers play in our everyday lives.
Through creative challenges, model-making materials and real-world problem solving, participants can investigate topics such as inclusive transport and design solutions to challenges faced by communities today.
Tool skills:
Develop confidence using tools safely and creatively.
Participants can explore how different tools work, take apart everyday objects and use equipment such as pliers, screwdrivers, hand drills and hammers to investigate, repair, design and create something new.
Electronic Circuits:
Explore the basics of electronics through hands-on experimentation.
Participants can investigate how everyday electronic items work, create simple circuits such as pipe cleaner light creations, or build larger illuminated structures using construction resources.
Where can PlayHEM take place?
PlayHEM has already inspired creativity at community festivals, community venues and holiday clubs, with sessions available from one hour to a full day.
We are looking to expand our partnerships with:
- Schools – including lunchtime clubs, enrichment activities and after-school STEM sessions
- Community groups – including Scouts, Beavers, youth groups and home education networks
- Holiday clubs and family programmes
- Festivals and community events
By bringing PlayHEM directly into your setting, we make STEM learning accessible, engaging and relevant for your community.
Pricing:
Session costs are based on your location, session length and requirements. Prices include resources, Learning Team delivery and travel costs.
