St John Ambulance Youth Visit Coventry Transport Museum for First Aid Event
30 September 2024
Coventry Transport Museum recently welcomed a team of ‘Badgers’ and ‘Cadets’ from St John Ambulance Youth, West Midlands Region, as part of the Bertie on Tour Summer Social Action Project.
The initiative aimed to teach essential first aid skills to members of the public, with the Transport Museum being one of the selected venues across the West Midlands during the three-week tour.
Visitors of all ages had the chance to learn vital first aid techniques, including CPR, recovery positions, and how to treat minor injuries. The hands-on training provided by Badgers (volunteers aged under 10) and Cadets (aged 11-16) proved to be a hit with attendees, many of whom praised the young volunteers for their professionalism and enthusiasm.
Matt Mullen, Venue Manager at Coventry Transport Museum, shared his thoughts on the event: “It was fantastic to see so many young people engaging with the public and sharing such valuable skills. We were thrilled to host St John Ambulance Youth as part of their tour and to be involved in a project that has such a positive impact.
“We also received a lovely postcard of gratitude from the Badgers and Cadets which we were really touched by. We look forward to hosting the group again in the future.”
The postcard from the Badgers and Cadets read: “We wanted to send you a massive thank you for providing a fantastic venue and allowing us to teach vital life-saving skills to over 100 people as part of the Bertie On Tour Summer Social Action Project.
“Our Badgers and Cadets had so much fun and this really was an incredible personal development opportunity for each and every individual who attended.
“The interactions that we had with members of the public were positive and while we hope no one ever finds themselves in the position where they need to use their new first aid skills, we know the information shared is potentially lifesaving.
“We really enjoyed teaching CPR, what to do when choking, and other aspects of first aid as well as wellbeing activities as part of the Action for Happiness movement.
“We can’t thank you enough for the opportunity and all of your support! Across our three weeks of tour we interacted with 5,000 members of the public and more than 100 of our young people got involved with the project. We’re just so proud to have so many young active citizens in the West Midlands.
“None of this would have been possible without your support. If there is anything our team can do for you in the future, we would always say yes to the opportunity to come back and visit again.”
The feedback from the public reflected the success of the initiative, with many expressing appreciation for the opportunity to learn potentially life-saving skills in a fun and accessible way.
St John Ambulance Youth’s Bertie on Tour project has been running across various locations in the West Midlands, bringing first aid training directly to communities and empowering young people to make a difference.
