Learning

Coventry Transport Museum makes the perfect learning environment for school or family visits.

Past Project - Coventry Transport Museum Consultation

Leading up to the 2015 redevelopment of Coventry Transport Museum, we worked with local residents to find out how they would change their museum for the better. Consultation work began in 2012, and continued right up to the launch of the new exhibitions in summer 2015. We spoke to a wide range of Coventrians, to make sure Coventry’s community voice was loud and clear throughout the new displays.

One of the key pieces of work to come out of this was our introduction of Makaton, a system of signs and symbols used by many people with learning disabilities. You can spot Makaton symbols on our main information panels, and many of our frontline staff have had initial training in using Makaton to communicate with museum visitors.

Feedback from community participants and visitors has also helped to shape:

- The layout of the museum
- The description of the exhibition spaces
- The names of each individual exhibition
- The style and content of vehicle and object labels
- The accessibility of exhibition content
- The style and design of the exhibitions

A big thank you to everyone who took part!
